2008 IRV Legislation
Representative Steve Simon and Senator Ann Rest have introduced legislation (HF 3006 & SF 3247) establishing ranked choice voting elections in Minnesota statute. If adopted, the legislation would establish statewide standards for how to conduct ranked choice voting elections in home rule cities that elect to use this voting method.
The bill would also require jurisdications purchasing new voting equipment systems to purchase equipment capable of handling ranked ballot elections, helping to simplify and expedite implementation efforts.
This bill was developed and recommended by the Secretary of State's Ranked Choice Voting Issues Group.
Update - March 21, 2008:
The bill was not heard in the House or Senate before the committee deadline and will not be considered further this year. FairVote Minnesota will continue to advocate for the legislation in the 2009 session.
Please still contact your legislators (Representative and Senator) to let them know you support ranked choice voting and to urge them to support the legislation next session.
Stay tuned for further legislative updates.
